Mark Rozzano and Nick Brooke Limited present a Churchill Theatre Bromley Production of 84 Charing Cross Road
starring Rula Lenska and William Gaunt.
RULA LENSKA (“Rock Follies”) and WILLIAM GAUNT (“No Place Like Home”/”Next of Kin”)
star in the timeless love story – 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD.
This tender, bittersweet comedy is the extraordinary true story of a vivacious and opinionated
New York writer Helene Hanff and her love affair with an antiquarian London bookshop and in
particular one of the staff, bookseller Frank Doel. Through their letters and passion for books,
they share a remarkable transatlantic romance that spans 20 years; their friendship blossoms into
love through their funny and often intimate correspondence.
|
|
 |
Their friendship begins in 1949 with
an advertisement in the Saturday Review and the correspondence that starts not only becomes a
chronicle of an era from late 1940s post-war Britain to the Beatles’ invasion in the 1960s, but
also a record of a love story. Their deeply touching relationship was captured in the highly
successful film version starring Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins.

|
James Roose-Evans, who directed the original hit West End and Broadway productions as well as
adapting the play from Helene Hanff’s book, again directs this remarkable story.
Rula Lenska is perhaps best known for her role in ‘Rock Follies’ but more recently has been seen
in the West End production of An Inspector Calls, Vagina Monologes and Eastenders.

|
William Gaunt, a child-hood hero of many for his role in the television series The Champions,
is a very familiar face on television with credits including Next of Kin with Penelope Keith
and No Place Like Home. They are joined by Helen Grace, Joanne Mitchell, John Atterbury,
Andrew Young, Drew Rhys Williams and Pippa Rathborne.
